Workshop Overview
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers the foundation’s most prestigious award for pre-tenure faculty. CAREER awards provide up to five years of funding to enable faculty to develop careers as outstanding teacher-scholars. To help UNL applicants develop competitive applications to the CAREER program, the Office of Research and Economic Development will host a workshop entitled:
How to Write Successful Proposals for the NSF CAREER Program
This two-hour workshop, followed by lunch, will cover topics such as:- How to decide when and if it’s the right time to apply for a CAREER grant
- How to position yourself and your research to be competitive for a CAREER award
- How to structure your proposal
- How to develop an educational plan
- Keys to success and common mistakes to avoid
- A step-by-step discussion of each section of the proposal and what it needs to tell the reviewers
- Questions and answers
The workshop will be presented by Lucy Deckard of Academic Research Funding Strategies, LLC. Ms. Deckard worked in research development at Texas A&M University (TAMU) for eight years, most recently serving as associate director of TAMU’s Office of Proposal Development. During that time, she helped develop and write successful proposals to NSF, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Education, the Department of Defense, and other agencies and foundations, including proposals for large institutional and center-level grants.
NSF CAREER Award Overview
To sustain and strengthen the nation’s science, mathematics, and engineering capabilities and to promote the use of those capabilities in service to society, NSF supports the early career development activities of those teacher-scholars most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. NSF established the CAREER program in recognition of the critical roles played by faculty members in integrating research and education and in fostering the natural connections between the processes of learning and discovery.

The CAREER workshop will be held on Thursday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the East Campus Union (Cottonwood Room).
