Lincoln Journal Star: Lego-robot challenge brings hundreds of Nebraska students to UNL

The Lincoln Journal Star published a March 16 article on the Nebraska FIRST Lego League Challenge Championship, March 15-16 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Coordinated through Nebraska 4-H, part of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the program features youth in grades 4-8 teaming up to solve robotics challenges using the classic building block toy. Brandy Schulze, educational engagement coordinator for Nebraska 4-H, was interviewed for the story.

WKRG: Work spouses are making a comeback

A Psychology Today blog post by Dawn O. Braithwaite, professor emerita of communication studies, was cited in a March 16 WKRG story on “work spouses” making a comeback. “The number of work spouses has increased due to: a) active organizational efforts to encourage employee camaraderie, b) longer hours spent working, in person or remotely, and c) cultural tendencies to name and define relationships,” Braithwaite wrote. Yahoo! News picked up the article.

Lincoln Journal Star: UNL signs 2nd Presidential Scholars recruit

Lillias McKillip, a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School, has accepted a University of Nebraska Presidential Scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, KETV, KOLN/KGIN and the Lincoln Journal Star have reported. McKillip, who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT, plans to study elementary education and Spanish at Nebraska. Gov. Jim Pillen and Chris Kabourek, interim president of the NU system, visited Lincoln Southeast March 8 to present McKillip with the full-ride scholarship.

KOLN/KGIN: Next 2-3 months will be critical to fighting drought, climatologist says

Eric Hunt, a climatologist with Nebraska Extension, was featured in a March 15 KOLN/KGIN story on drought conditions in Nebraska. He said precipitation in the next two to three months is critical to preventing drought. “If we don’t really get that recharge, then we’re going into the summer basically needing it to be relatively wet,” he said. “And … you don’t want to count on it being wet in the summer.”

The Fence Post: Husker faculty, NASA pursue partnerships on Midwest climate resilience

Scientists from multiple states and NASA met at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for the Harnessing the Heartland conference Feb. 26-28 to hear from a range of Midwest stakeholders about their climate-related concerns. Attendees then brainstormed ways that universities, NASA and the private sector can work together to promote climate sustainability in the region. The Lincoln Journal Star published a March 15 article on the inaugural First Nations Choral Festival, held March 5 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The 90-minute concert was the recital for Mary Young, a doctoral student in choral conducting at Nebraska.

Stateline: If schools won't ban kids' cellphones, some lawmakers say they will

A 2019 study by Barney McCoy, professor of broadcasting and journalism, was cited in a March 13 Stateline article on state lawmakers considering laws to prohibit students’ cellphone use during class. The study of college students in 37 states (plus Alberta, Canada) found that respondents spent 19.4% of class time using digital devices for non-class purposes. McCoy was also interviewed for the story, which was picked up by Yahoo! News and a few other media outlets.

Lincoln Journal Star: Morrill Hall set to reopen after largest-ever renovation project

The University of Nebraska State Museum and Mueller Planetarium will reopen to the public on March 15. The 97-year-old Morrill Hall has been closed since Oct. 2 for renovations to improve accessibility and better protect its exhibits and research specimens. Stories on the reopening have appeared in KLIN, KLKN, KOLN/KGIN, the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald.

Houston Chronicle: Houston doctor is helping develop robots for surgeries in space

The Houston Chronicle published a March 13 article on Dr. Ted Voloyiannis of Houston, a consultant for Virtual Incision’s Miniaturized In Vivo Robotic Assistant (MIRA). The surgical robot, controlled by Voloyiannis and other surgeons at Virtual Incision’s headquarters in Lincoln, performed a successful simulated procedure aboard the International Space Station on Feb. 10. The MIRA Surgical System was invented by Shane Farritor, Lederer Professor of Engineering at Nebraska and Virtual Incision’s co-founder and chief technology officer.

Caleb Kelly, a senior at Pender High School, and Lillias McKillip, a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School, are the first two recipients of the University of Nebraska’s Presidential Scholarship. They both plan to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Nebraska Public Media published a March 12 article on the students.
