Dean Marjorie Kostelnik of the College of Education and Human Sciences has announced that Larry Scharmann will be joining the college Aug. 1, 2014 as the chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. Scharmann, currently a professor at Florida State University where he serves as assistant dean and director of the School of Teacher Education and as the Anne and John Daves Distinguished Professor of Education, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and his Ph.D. in education at Indiana University.

“Dr. Scharmann is a good fit for TLTE and CEHS,” said Kostelnik. “He is a talented administrator, teacher and scholar with roots here in Lincoln and several years experience on other campuses. I am looking forward to a productive and happy future for him and for the department.”

Scharmann also spent 15 years as the chair of secondary education at Kansas State University’s College of Education. Earlier this school year, Scharmann and colleagues at K-State completed a $3.1 million project through the National Science Foundation focused on linking evidence to inference in the science classroom.

“Larry is an accomplished educator, teaching both graduate students and undergraduates in science education,” noted Kostelnik. “Over the past decade he has won awards for his distinguished performance in the classroom, for the innovative use of assessment, as an advisor and mentor to students, and for his outstanding papers focused on teaching science.”

“This is more than a professional move for my wife and me, as it represents the opportunity to return to Lincoln,” said Scharmann who has family in the community. Although he’s not a native of Nebraska, nine of his family members hold degrees from UNL. “We have lifelong friends nearby and I can reengage with some university and school-based professionals from the past 30 years both in Lincoln and Manhattan, Kansas. Therefore, in many important ways, Judy and I welcome a return home.”
