Massimo Pigliucci, a prominent philosopher of science and evolutionary biologist, will present public talks on April 14 and 15 at UNL.

Pigliucci will give a talk at 7:30 p.m., April 14, based on his 2010 book: “Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk”. Location: Henzlik Hall Auditorium 124. His lecture is part of the School of Biological Sciences seminar series and co-sponsored by the Nebraska Citizens for Science.

On Friday, April 15, at 12:30 p.m., Pigliucci will present “Toward an Extended Evolutionary Synthesis? The current status and likely future of evolutionary theory.”The talk will be based on his 2010 book “Evolution – The Extended Synthesis” co-edited with Gerd B. Müller. Location: 103 Manter Hall. The lecture is part of the Ecology, Evolution and Behavior Seminar Series.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Pigliucci received a Doctorate in Genetics from the University of Ferrara in Italy, a PhD in Botany from the University of Connecticut, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee. He is currently a Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York-Lehman College and his research is concerned with philosophy of science and the relationship between science and religion. He has also done extensive work on evolutionary biology, mainly on natural selection, phenotypic plasticity, and genotype by environment interactions.

Pigliucci has published more than 100 technical papers and 12 books including Denying Evolution: Creationism, Scientism and the Nature of Science, Making Sense of Evolution: Toward a Coherent Picture of Evolutionary Theory (with Jonathan Kaplan), Evolution: The Extended Synthesis (co-edited with Gerd Muller), and most recently Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk. In 1997, Dr. Pigliucci was awarded the prestigious Dobzhansky Prize from the Society for the Study of Evolution. In 2004, he was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science “for fundamental studies of genotype by environmental interactions and for public defense of evolutionary biology from pseudoscientific attack.”
