Columbus Telegram: 3 students from Columbus will assist at Masters Tournament

Three students from Columbus — Kallie Edins, Hannah Kwapnioski and Lyv Williams — are part of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln contingent helping provide hospitality services at the 2025 Masters Tournament, the Columbus Telegram reported April 9.

Lincoln Journal Star: Nebraska lawmakers approve small increase in state aid to NU

Lawmakers on the Appropriations Committee approved a 1.25% increase to the University of Nebraska's state aid April 8 but opted not to give an additional boost in the second year of the biennium budget cycle, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. Nebraska Public Media: Annual groundwater report shows dip from drought

The most recent Nebraska Statewide Groundwater-Level Report was featured in an April 8 Nebraska Public Media article. The report, produced by the Conservation and Survey Division in the School of Natural Resources, showed groundwater levels in the state generally dipped in 2024 after a season of drought. Aaron Young, the CSD survey geologist who compiles the report, was interviewed for the article.

Fremont Tribune: UNL students honored during Teacher Education Convocation

The 225 Husker undergraduate students who have officially been admitted to teacher education programs in the College of Education and Human Sciences during the 2024-25 academic year were recognized at the second annual Teacher Education Convocation April 4 at Carolyn Pope Edwards Hall. The Columbus Telegram and Fremont Tribune ran articles on the future teachers from their areas.

Lincoln Journal Star: Humanities cuts hit UNL projects on Cather, Genoa Indian School

Seven research projects at the university receiving more than $1.6 million in NEH funding received notification that their grants had been canceled on April 2, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. Among the projects are efforts to digitize the works of Willa Cather, Genoa Indian School student records and historic Nebraska newspapers. Andrew Jewell, co-director of the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities; Margaret Jacobs, director of the Center for Great Plains Studies; and Laura Weakly, a metadata encoding specialist with University Libraries, were interviewed for the article.

KHGI: O'Donnell says tariffs could have wide-ranging effects

Jill O’Donnell, director of the Clayton Yeutter Institute of International Trade and Finance, was interviewed for an April 7 KHGI story on how the Trump administration’s recent tariffs might impact Nebraska. “Agriculture is the sector that gets hit hard with retaliation,” she said. “That happened a few years ago and could possibly happen again, depending on how things play out. Agriculture tends to be a sensitive sector that gets hits with retaliation.”

Omaha World-Herald: Photo of Nebraska students posing with hate symbol surfaces

Ari Kohen, Schlesinger Professor of social justice and director of the Harris Center for Judaic Studies, was interviewed for an April 7 Omaha World-Herald article on two Nebraska high school students allegedly posing with a Nazi flag in a school locker room. Kohen noted that the Jewish community has deep roots in Nebraska, including Holocaust survivors who resettled in the state and World War II veterans who worked to liberate Nazi concentration camps. The incident points to a clear need for additional, more in-depth Holocaust education for Nebraska students, he said.

Lincoln Journal Star: Heuermann, ag innovator and UNL philanthropist, dies at 99

Keith Heuermann, an agricultural pioneer, philanthropist and longtime supporter of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, died March 29 in Grand Island. He was 99. The Lincoln Journal Star published an April 7 article on Heuermann. Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett was quoted in the article.

Lincoln Journal Star: UNL College of Law helping train attorneys for youth cases

The University of Nebraska College of Law is set to launch the Nebraska Children’s Justice and Legal Advocacy Center, pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, the Lincoln Journal Star reported April 6. The program aims to equip more Nebraska attorneys — especially in rural areas — to handle cases involving family and children. Michelle Paxton, the Schmid Professor for Excellence in Service who is set to become the center’s director, was interviewed for the article.

In its eighth year, “I Love NU” Day is an annual event that brings together dozens of people from across the state to celebrate the University of Nebraska system and promote the critical part it plays in economic and workforce development.

Lincoln Journal Star: New UNL market using walk-out purchasing tech

The Lincoln Journal Star published an April 4 article on the new Herbie’s Market in the Nebraska Union. The market features Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which allows customers to scan a payment method upon entry, pick up items and leave without traditional checkout lines.
