First-Year Experience & Transition Programs office

The First-Year Experience & Transition Programs office at Love Library South on Monday, Jan. 10, 2019, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

It can sometimes feel overwhelming to be at a large school, but an office at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln aims to help students feel at home.

The First-Year Experience & Transition Programs office at Love Library South offers students the opportunity to find helpful resources during their academic experience, according to a handout from their office.

Despite the name of the office, all students can benefit from the available help. The office offers academic success coaching, success workshops and Study Stop tutoring, according to Lori Romano, director of the programs. The main goal is to help all UNL students be successful.

“I always say, if you have a question and you don’t know who to ask, come to First-Year Experience & Transition Programs,” Romano said in an email. “If we can’t help you, we probably know who can and we’ll help you get connected.”

Ann Callies, an academic success coach in the office, said she recommends the office as a place for students to gain new information which can help the students’ academics.

“It’s a great place to check in and make sure you’re doing all you can to be successful,” she said. “Come to a workshop or schedule an appointment with a coach and see what we’re all about.”

Callies said she meets with students on a one-on-one basis to help them be more academically successful, whether that’s developing time management or other study skills. She said she also presents workshops and manages “The Study Stop,” a tutoring program that meets every Monday-Thursday from 7-9 p.m. in the Adele Coryell Hall Learning Commons.

The Academic Success Workshops run throughout the semester and cover a different topic each week, like time management, reading strategies, note-taking, test prep and even stress management, according to Romano.

Students can meet with coaches once or set up recurring appointments throughout the semester. Romano said they talk about everything from time management to test prep to homesickness.

“Everything you need to know about our office is in our tagline,” Romano said. “‘You belong here. You can succeed. We can help.’”
