The University of Nebraska Dairy Store has been serving sweet treats for decades at its East Campus location.

But soon, the Lincoln staple will be undergoing some major changes.

The store currently located on East Campus near Holdrege and Dairy Store Drive will be moved to the back of its current building, facing the Legacy Plaza.

"The university wants that to be a focal point in the future. And we at the Dairy Store consider ourselves sort of the face of East Campus,” said Dairy Store Manager, Leroy Braden.

Its all part of a bigger project by the university, bringing a more modern feel to the area with a plan to build around the plaza over the next few years.

"It's going to be a hub for student activity and other events on East Campus,” said Food Processing Center, Executive Director Terry Howell.

Another change, the dairy plant will be moving to the Food Innovation Center on Nebraska’s Innovation Campus

"I think for the students it's going to give them a chance to work hands on, on an operations that will be much like what they would experience after they graduate,” said Howell.

Howell says they choose not to move the Dairy Store itself to Innovation Campus, to keep the tradition alive.

"We're fortunate that the university cares enough for the dairy store, we're fortunate enough that we get to not only have new students come here, but past students, students that were here 50 years ago come in and get the same ice cream when they were here as students,” said Braden.

Employees at the Dairy Store say construction won't stop them from selling ice cream- adding they hope to be in the new spot in May of 2019.

As for the dairy plant, they have not yet set a date for the move.
