Summer is here! School is out, kids are running around everywhere, and the local DQ is packed! What’s there to worry about? Despite all the fun and games that summer brings, it’s always important to consider some safety considerations to keep kids safe throughout June, July, and the rest of the year. Think about the activities that your kids partake in during the summer. Usually water sports, camping, recreational riding, and other outdoor activities are involved. Here are a few tips to remember as you head outdoors this summer.
Wear sunscreen!Even spending a few minutes in the sun can harm your skin, so don’t forget the SPF 30!Sunglasses and hats can also be handy to protect your eyes and head!
When camping, make sure children are aware of campfires and understand the risks of getting burned.Roasting marshmallows are fun, and you don’t want to ruin your camping trip with a visit to the emergency room because of campfire accidents.
ATVs are fun, but it’s important to heed the labels on the machine. If a machine is rated for 10 and up, children under this age are at a huge risk of injury or even death.Supervise children when riding, always wear a helmet, and make sure the machine is age-appropriate.
Always supervise children around water.Even children who know how to swim are at risk.Life jackets are always a good idea, especially around rivers, lakes, and ponds where lifeguards may not be present.
Have fun outdoors, but pay attention to your surroundings.Remember our native wildlife enjoys the warm weather as well. Some of these critters may not appreciate your company, so be aware of where you are and what’s around.
Summers are much more enjoyable when everyone follows posted rules and regulations to remain safe and healthy. For more information or ideas for summer activities, email me at sarah.roberts@unl.edu. Stay safe and THINK OUTSIDE!
