Males named Julie and Henry Bauermeister Professor of Education and Human Sciences

Lorraine Males has been named the Julie and Henry Bauermeister Professor of Education and Human Sciences.

Males’ research and teaching focuses on teacher learning, particularly at the early stages of teacher development, including preservice secondary mathematics teacher education and induction. To date, she has produced 17 peer-reviewed publications, edited one book, provided 95 presentations and garnered over $5 million in extramural grant funding including an NSF CAREER Award.

As a teacher educator, Males studies how teachers approach curriculum and math textbooks to develop lesson plans and enact those plans in their classrooms. Her research findings are being used to develop college-level instructional materials to prepare future teachers to use math curriculum effectively.

“Dr. Males is most deserving of this named professorship in recognition of her strong career trajectory thus far,” said Sherri Jones, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. “She is an exemplary educator whose work contributes significantly to the training of highly qualified math educators.” 

The Bauermeister Professorship was established through a gift from Julie and Henry Bauermeister, who are both University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumni. The professorship is awarded based upon ability and accomplishments in teaching and research as well as academic promise. It provides scholarly research support with a preference to faculty in math education. The Bauermeister’s also have a scholarship fund for undergraduate students in human sciences programs.
